My honest review

I’ve written about Sunbasket many times over the years in meal kit roundups, so I was excited to finally try it out for myself.

While I do think there are some positives worth highlighting, it also fell flat in a few areas too, especially compared to other meal kits I’ve tested in the past, like Green Chef.

For starters, the selection of meals was pretty limited, especially if you have any dietary restrictions.

For example, there were only around four vegetarian meal kits to choose from when I was placing my order, so I didn’t have much variety to choose from.

I ended up picking out three different meals to try, including:

  • Stir-Fry With Carrots, Zucchini, and Cashew-Plum Sauce and Organic Firm Tofu
  • Sweet and Sticky Tofu Rice Bowls With Arugula-Orange Salad

There was a small hiccup in the ordering process, as I was charged for shipping, even though Sunbasket advertises free delivery for first-time customers.

It was an easy fix through their website chat, but I’d still recommend double-checking your receipt to avoid the same issue.

A week or so after I placed my first order, it showed up fresh and neatly packed, with each recipe clearly labeled. The pre-portioned ingredients were grouped in paper bags, making it really easy to get started cooking.

Preparation

All of the meals I tried were quick to prepare, taking about 20-40 minutes from start to finish.

In fact, this was one of the fastest and easiest meal kit services I’ve tested.

The instructions were clear and straightforward, and I appreciated that many ingredients were already prepped or required minimal chopping.

That said, I did run into a couple of small issues.

For starters, the ingredient amounts felt a little off in certain recipes. The Sweet and Sticky Tofu Rice Bowls with Arugula-Orange Salad, for example, looked like it would have just a light handful of arugula, but it ended up taking over most of the plate (and overshadowing the meager amount of orange slices).

The flatbreads also came with a “side salad” of arugula that was actually a full bag — much more than what you’d expect for two servings.

I also ran into a few issues with the instructions. In the flatbread recipe, for instance, it called for placing both pieces of lavash side-by-side on one tray, but they were way too large to fit on a single tray.

Overall, though, the instructions were still easy to follow, and the preparation process was pretty simple.

Taste

Honestly, the Sunbasket meals I tried were a bit of a mixed bag.

My favorite was the Fast Potato and Ricotta Flatbread with Sweet Pea Pistou because I really loved the creamy ricotta and the bright, flavorful pistou.

However, it also came with an arugula side salad that was literally just a massive pile of arugula with a bit of lemon juice and olive oil.

I made and tried it for the sake of testing the recipe and giving it an honest go, but it went promptly back in the fridge to be repurposed into a different dish. I’m a vegetarian, not a rabbit, so I won’t be eating plain arugula unless I lose my taste buds or my mind (or both).

Arugula seemed to be a recurring theme on the menu (or maybe they just had a BOGO deal with their supplier) because the Sweet and Sticky Tofu Rice Bowls also came with an arugula salad. This one was slightly more interesting, at least, with carrots, sesame oil, and a few orange slices mixed in.

I liked the sauces that came with the two tofu dishes, including a sweet and sticky sauce and a cashew-plum sauce, both of which were tasty.

However, I did feel like the stir-fry dish was a little incomplete because there was no rice or other grain to round it out.

Texture

I’m big on texture, and I feel like all three meals I tried from Sunbasket held up pretty well in that department.

The flatbreads became nice and toasty, the veggies cooked well without getting soggy, and the tofu was perfectly crisp and chewy.

While the flavors were hit or miss, the meals definitely had a satisfying range of textures that made them enjoyable to eat.

Would I recommend it?

If you don’t have any dietary restrictions and are looking for an easy way to speed up meal prep, I think Sunbasket could be worth a try.
