HelloFresh Review: Is It Worth It? A Dietitian Answers

Quick summary

  • HelloFresh is one of the largest meal kit companies in the world, offering a wide variety of recipes and pre-portioned ingredients delivered right to your door.
  • After trying HelloFresh myself, I evaluated the taste, cooking experience, menu variety, and nutritional quality to see whether it lives up to its reputation.
  • While HelloFresh wowed me with its flavorful recipes and easy cooking experience, it may not be the right choice if you need meals tailored to a very specific dietary preference.

As one of the biggest meal kit companies in the world, HelloFresh has built a massive fan following and continues to be one of the most recognizable names in the industry. With millions of subscribers globally and a leading share of the U.S. meal kit market, it’s clear that the company has figured out a way to keep customers coming back.

But with so many meal delivery services available today, I wanted to see what makes HelloFresh stand out. Does it actually live up to the hype, or is it simply the biggest name because it got there first?

I decided to try HelloFresh myself to see how the meals tasted, how easy the recipes were to prepare, and why the company has had so much staying power in such a competitive market. As a dietitian, I was also curious whether the menu offers balanced, nutritious options that I would actually recommend.

Here’s my honest review of HelloFresh, including what I loved, what I think could be improved, and who I think should give it a try.

What is HelloFresh?

HelloFresh is one of the most popular meal kit delivery services on the market. It aims to make it easier to get dinner on the table without the hassle of meal planning or grocery shopping.

While HelloFresh isn’t designed around specific diet plans, it offers plenty of options for different preferences, including vegetarian meals and recipes that are higher in protein or lower in calories.

It offers several core plans, including:

  • Meat & Veggies
  • Veggie
  • Family-Friendly
  • Fit & Wholesome
  • Quick & Easy
  • Pescatarian

Each recipe includes a full ingredient list and detailed nutrition information, making it easy to find meals that align with your goals.

How it works

Getting started with HelloFresh is simple.

When you sign up, you can complete a brief quiz, which asks about your dietary preferences and goals to provide personalized recommendations.

Next, you can select a plan based on how many meals you’d like delivered each week and how many people you’re feeding. Plans are available with 2-6 meals per week, and you can select two, four, or six servings per meal.

From there, you can browse the weekly menu and pick whatever recipes sound most appealing.

When you’re ready to check out, you can choose your preferred time and date for delivery and add any instructions as needed.

Your ingredients will arrive pre-portioned, sorted into individual paper bags by recipe, and packaged in an insulated box to help keep everything fresh.

Each meal comes with a detailed recipe card that walks you through the cooking process step by step.

Most recipes take about 20-40 minutes to prepare, and many are specifically designed to minimize prep work and cleanup.

You can customize your weekly selections, skip deliveries as needed, pause your subscription, or cancel at any time.

HelloFresh offers over 100 options to choose from each week, making it easy to find meals that fit your schedule, dietary preferences, and taste buds.

Nutritional value

Many of the meal kits from HelloFresh include a good mix of protein, carbs, and veggies, making it easy to put together a satisfying dinner without much planning.

That said, I found that HelloFresh meals tended to be a bit higher in calories than some other meal kit companies I’ve reviewed. While many recipes fall within a moderate range, I also saw several meals with 800 calories or more per serving, especially those featuring creamy sauces, cheese, or larger portions of starches.

I also noticed that some of the vegetarian meals were surprisingly low in protein. Although HelloFresh offers a dedicated Veggie plan, a few of the plant-based options relied more heavily on pasta, rice, or vegetables and contained significantly less protein than I would typically recommend for a balanced meal.

If you’re vegetarian or actively trying to increase your protein intake, you’ll likely want to pay close attention to the nutrition information as you pick your recipes.

Several meals I reviewed were also pretty high in sodium, with some containing well over half of the recommended daily limit in a single serving.

As I was preparing the meal kits, I also noticed that many recipes instructed me to add salt at multiple steps throughout the cooking process, in addition to using pre-made sauces, seasoning blends, or stock concentrates that were already high in sodium.

If you’re watching your sodium intake, you might want to be a little more conservative with the added salt or stick to lower-sodium recipes when possible.

Overall, I think HelloFresh does a good job of offering balanced, satisfying meals that make home cooking more fun and easy.

That said, not all meals are created equal. Some are much higher in calories, sodium, or lower in protein than others, so it’s worth taking a quick look at the nutrition facts before adding meals to your box.

Cost

Prices for HelloFresh range from $9.99-$12.99 per serving, depending on the number of meal kits and portions that you order.

In general, the cost per serving decreases as you order more meals, making larger plans more budget-friendly on a per-meal basis.

Certain meals also offer premium upgrades, including specialty proteins like filet mignon or scallops, which cost an additional $2.99-$9.99 per serving.

Shipping prices vary based on your location, but generally cost between $10.99-$12.99 per box.

HelloFresh regularly offers discounts for new subscribers, including promotions that can make your first box free (except for shipping).

If you’ve been curious about trying a meal kit service but aren’t ready to commit, these introductory offers can be an easy, affordable way to see whether HelloFresh is a good fit for you.

My honest review

I’ve tried a lot of different meal kits lately, but surprisingly still hadn’t given HelloFresh a shot.

After hearing quite a bit about it over the years, I was super excited to try it out and take advantage of their introductory offers.

Admittedly, the sheer number of options was a little overwhelming at first, but I appreciated having so many meals to choose from. Many meal kit companies I’ve tried only offer a handful of vegetarian options each week, so it was refreshing to see a larger variety of plant-based meals on the menu.

I picked six different meals to try, including:

  • Zucchini & Sun-Dried Tomato Risotto
  • Sweet Potato & Pepper Quesadillas
  • Cheesy Spinach, Tomato & Feta Panini
  • Southwest Corn & Zucchini Flautas
  • Middle Eastern Chickpea Bowls
  • Vegan Maple Carrot Power Bowls

As a new subscriber, I got my first box for free and paid just $11.99 for shipping — score!

There were also several different delivery dates to choose from, which was another nice perk compared with some other meal kit services that only offer a set delivery day each week. That little bit of extra flexibility made it much easier to pick a delivery schedule that actually worked with my routine.

Everything was ordered right on time and the ingredients were well-packaged, insulated, and still cold upon arrival.

The meals were also neatly organized and grouped by recipe, which made it easier to find ingredients and keep my fridge from turning into a cluttered mess.

Preparation

All six recipes I tried were very easy to make and beginner-friendly.

However, they still required some basic cooking skills and attention to detail. In fact, I actually had two minor cooking mishaps while preparing my meals (RIP to my thumb).

I’d recommend taking your time and using caution with things like sharp knives, hot pans, and box graters (!!!), especially if you’re newer to cooking or trying to multitask by making dinner while entertaining a toddler.

Apart from that, everything was smooth and straightforward.

I also really appreciated that most ingredients came pre-portioned, which meant less measuring and fewer leftover ingredients piling up in my pantry. It made the cooking process feel more streamlined and also helped cut down on food waste.

Taste

If there’s one thing HelloFresh does well, it’s flavor. While a few meals stood out more than others, none were bland or boring.

My favorites were the Vegan Maple Carrot Power Bowls and the Cheesy Spinach, Tomato & Feta Panini, which was served with potato wedges.

Some of the other recipes I tried were tasty, but not quite as wow-worthy. The Zucchini & Sun-Dried Tomato Risotto, for instance, was creamy and comforting, but also felt a bit one-note compared with some of the other recipes.

The same was true for the Sweet Potato & Pepper Quesadillas, which could have used an extra drizzle of hot sauce or some additional seasoning.

Overall, I was impressed by the variety and creativity of HelloFresh’s menu. The recipes were a fun way to mix things up, and I appreciated that even the vegetarian options included plenty of bold flavors and interesting ingredient combos.

Would I recommend it?

I would recommend giving HelloFresh a try, especially if you’ve been curious about meal kits but aren’t sure if they’re right for you.

With so many introductory offers available that can make your first box practically free (apart from shipping), it’s a pretty easy way to test it out without a long-term commitment.

After trying a box or two, you can get a better feel for whether the recipes and cooking experience align with your lifestyle.

That said, I do think some other meal kit services may be a better fit for people with specific dietary preferences.

While I was initially impressed by the number of vegetarian options available, I found that a lot of the vegetarian meals felt a bit like an afterthought.

A few recipes seemed like they were originally designed around meat and simply offered a vegetarian swap or removed the protein rather than creating a meal specifically built around plant-based proteins. I would have loved to see more options featuring ingredients like tofu, tempeh, or other intentional vegetarian protein sources.

For most people looking for an easy way to cook more at home, try new recipes, and add some variety to their weekly meals, though, I think HelloFresh is a solid option! I enjoyed the meals I tried, appreciated the variety of unique flavors, and found it to be a fun way to shake up my usual dinner routine.

Who should try HelloFresh?

HelloFresh might be worth a shot if you like the idea of cooking at home but want to simplify meal prep and take some of the stress out of meal planning and grocery shopping.

It’s especially great if you value flexibility. With HelloFresh, you can choose from a wide variety of weekly recipes, customize your meals, skip deliveries, or even pause your subscription as needed. This makes it a smart choice for people who want the convenience of a meal kit without feeling locked into a rigid schedule.

The menu is also huge, with options for different tastes, cooking styles, and preferences. No matter what you’re looking for, there are plenty of choices to explore.

I think HelloFresh would be a good fit for:

  • people who want to cook at home more often but need help with the planning process
  • households that are tired of making the same few dinners on repeat
  • newer cooks who want easy-to-follow recipes to gain a little extra confidence in the kitchen
  • couples or families who enjoy choosing meals together each week
  • anyone who likes discovering new flavors, cuisines, and ingredient combinations

That said, HelloFresh may not be the best option if you need meals that are specifically built around a strict dietary preference or nutrition goal.

Even though there are helpful filters for options like vegetarian, vegan, and Protein Smart meals, some groups may find the selection more limited than companies that focus specifically on those needs.

It’s also worth keeping in mind that HelloFresh is still a cooking service, not a prepared meal delivery service. That means you’ll save time on planning and shopping, but you’ll still need to chop, cook, and clean up afterward.

For a lot of people, though, that middle ground is exactly what makes it appealing: you get the experience of a homemade meal without as much hassle.

Pros and cons

HelloFresh offers a convenient way to try new recipes and simplify weeknight dinners, but it’s not perfect for everyone. Here are the biggest pros and cons based on my experience.

Pros:

  • Huge selection of recipes: There are over 100 recipes to choose from every week, including options that fit different tastes, schedules, and preferences.
  • Exciting way to try new meals: The rotating menu includes plenty of creative recipes and flavor combinations that can help you break out of your usual dinner routine.
  • Convenient meal planning: Having the recipes and ingredients delivered takes away much of the mental load that comes with figuring out what to make and creating a grocery list.
  • Ingredients are organized and portioned: Most ingredients come pre-measured and grouped by recipe, which makes cooking easier and helps cut back on leftover ingredients and food waste.
  • Flexible subscription options: You can choose your delivery frequency, skip weeks, pause your plan, or cancel if you need a break from deliveries.
  • Beginner-friendly instructions: The recipe cards provide clear, step-by-step directions that make the meals approachable, even if you’re newer to cooking.

Cons:

  • Vegetarian options could be more thoughtfully designed: While HelloFresh offers vegetarian and vegan filters, some plant-based meals felt more like meat-based recipes adapted without the meat rather than meals created around vegetarian protein sources.
  • Some meals are higher in calories and sodium: Depending on the recipe, certain meals can be quite calorie-dense or contain a significant amount of sodium, especially those with sauces, cheese, or seasoning blends.
  • Not completely hands-off: HelloFresh saves time on shopping and planning, but you’ll still need to prep ingredients, cook the meal, and clean up afterward.
  • Can be more expensive than cooking from scratch: Although it offers convenience, the cost per serving of HelloFresh is typically higher than buying ingredients yourself and preparing similar meals at home.
